Project Title: Re-introduction of the Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) in Lebanon

Donor: The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and The Prince Bernard Nature Fund (PBNF).

Main objectives: To protect biodiversity by preventing the extinction of threatened species, and specifically the reintroduction of the Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) to Lebanon in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, which became extinct more than a century ago.

Main activities:

• Keeping under observation and monitoring the Ibex in a fence until they are released into the wild.

• Releasing Nubian Ibex populations into the wild according to the work plan (including procurement of monitoring materials: collars, GPS, VHS, microchips, etc.) and regular observation, live monitoring, and GPS/VHF data analysis.

• Implementing a specific health program for flocks of sheep and goats, including periodic check-ups and vaccination.

• Technical assistance to the Shouf Biosphere Reserve in the management and control of ibex.

• Training the local team to monitor and manage the Nubian Ibex and help them determine the most appropriate methods to capture and release the ibex into the wild.

Duration: Originally, 02/04/2020 - 01/04/2021, and was extended up to 2/10/2022 (18 months).
