The Shouf Biosphere Reserve, as part of The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme, aims at establishing a scientific basis for enhancing the relationship between people and their environments by combining the natural and social sciences to improve human livelihoods and safeguarding natural and managed ecosystems. It promotes innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable.
In the past few years, many publications and scientific articles were produced, summarizing the vast research carried out supported by Lebanese and foreign experts and can all be found in the Publications section. The studies include documented information on traditional edible and medicinal plants and methods of propagating them, especially the Gundelia, a comprehensive groundwater assessment. They include guidelines on Forest and Landscape Restoration, on the restoration of stonewall terraces; and on sustainable agriculture. The reader can find monitoring programs for ecosystem restoration interventions, including the wild plant monitoring program in agricultural lands, reports on the reintroduction of the Nubian Ibex, and many others.
